When You Are Ready For a New Pet
by TE Sutton
Please consider adopting a shelter pet or providing a loving home for a homeless animal. I network with lots of other people who can help you find a pet and in some cases arrange their transportation to you. You will find a forever grateful and appreciative companion when you adopt. Many purebred animals are in shelters and most shelters even have waiting lists for them. I don't believe an animal has to be a specific breed to deserve our love or a good home. With so many animals that are in desperate need of homes, it just seems rather selfish to go purchase one from a breeder. Your local shelter will charge you a minimal adoption fee, but this will likely cover their spay or neuter surgery and vaccinations. These places aren't out to make money on animals. In fact, they rely on donations and adoption fees to cover the medical expenses for incoming animals. Few animals in shelters ever make it out alive. That is the harsh reality. If every family looking for a new pet would open their hearts to one of these babies, our shelters would be empty. That is how we want them. I am proud that most of my pets came from the street. Some were even rescues. I love them and they are worth everything to me.
FACT: About fifty percent of the dogs in shelters today are owner surrenders.
FACT: Approximately seventy percent of cats and kittens in shelters will be euthanized.
FACT: Eight hundred dogs and cats are euthanized every hour in this country.
FACT: Only one of every ten dogs and one of every twelve cats ever finds a permanent home.
FACT: All of the statistics listed above are unacceptable.
