When you own a husky dog there are two ways to get him ready for action - one is to get a professional trainer to get him in shape, the other is to do it all yourself.
While the first option will get you a well trained dog quickly - and with no personal hassle - the second is generally the more advisable. Not only will this method save you money, but it will also be a great bonding experience for you and your dog. This means he is more likely to be loyal and willing to be a hard worker for you in the years that follow.
Before you start to train your dog you should build up a relationship with him. Get to know each other, play games together in your garden and find out what he likes to eat. One thing to keep in mind is that you should never encourage a dog to jump on you, so if he starts to get excited and leaps upon you, you should try to teach him out of that behaviour. This is an important part of the alpha training - you must teach your dog that you are the alpha otherwise he will start to take liberties and he will be harder to control. Simple things - like eating your meal before feeding your dog - can help stamp your authority in your household.
Another alpha teaching technique is to always call your dog over to you for petting and attention - and when you come home, always wait for the dog to approach you - otherwise he'll get delusions of grandeur.
After that it's time to get on with the proper basic training. First, take your husky out into the big world on a short leash. Teach him to walk buy your side and not to run ahead of you. As he begins to get more obedient, you can begin to lengthen his leash to give him a greater sense of freedom; however, if he starts to stray from your side you should bring him back immediately.
After that you should think about teaching the simple commands. Get him to sit on your word - maybe provide treats to let him know when he's done well - and then move on to 'stay'. Once he stays in one play on your command, you should teach him the recall command - after he's stayed in one spot, he should come bounding up to you.
The better your dog does, the better you should reward him. Buying small treats for him will encourage him to continue learning and trying to please him. However, you should always limit the treats - too many and he might start to get a bit flabby, too few and he might overwork his body trying to please you meaning you need to take out an unnecessary claim on your pet insurance.
