My father, who is not extra large, had complained to me that one of the few problems he was encountering in old age was being stiff and sore in the morning. Once he said that it was easy to figure out what one of the problems might be. He had been sleeping on the same hard bed for the last 30 years. His mattresses have always been the same. Like sleeping on the hard ground. So what I did was get him a 3" dense foam mattresses with memory. What a change in the way he felt in the morning. While not totally eliminating all the aches and pains it did make him feel a lot better.
That experience started me thinking about our dog who was getting of and could definitely be considered an extra large dog. I had always assumed that the floor was a perfect place for him to sleep a rest. That's how dogs were meant to sleep. Either outdoors or on the kitchen floor. Who would ever think that a large, tough dog would need a pet bed. Then thinking about the experience with my Dad I started observing that big old fido was looking a little stiff in the mornings and our morning walks were beginning to slow down.
I had never thought of buying a pet bed before. Those are only for some lady's pampered poodle that was either laying on pink cushion or being carried around in the grocery store. So putting my masculinity aside I went shopping for a pet bed for my dog. Because he was a big dog and weighed over a hundred ponds I had to find something that had a good cushion and was large enough for him to stretch out. I started my shopping at the local pet store and from there went to the larger chains. I couldn't find exactly what I needed there so I the went to the computer and typed in a search for pet beds. There were hundreds of beds to choose from in different sizes, colors, densities, and fabrics. And if my dog had been a total outside dog I could have even got a bed with a heater. Can you believe that, I would have got my dog a heated bed.
I soon found what I was looking for and had it delivered to the house in about 10 days. Now since fido had never seen a pet bed before it took a little work convincing him what it was for but eventually he got the picture and now loves it.
And the best part for both of us is that in the morning he is no longer as stiff and sore and our morning walks are with a little more speed and enthusiasm. I wish I had done this for him a long time ago.
